Samsung Galaxy S III can connect to anything demonstrates it on video

Samsung’s flagship the Galaxy S III is among the most capable Android mobile devices on the market today and its powers aren’t confined to just raw computing power and a great display.






The S III is quite the connectivity beast, as tech blog AndroidNZ was eager to demonstrate in a lengthy video. They put the Galaxy S III through its paces by hooking it up to various devices, flash drives, hard disks and other gadgets to see if it delivers.

And surprisingly, the Galaxy S III didn’t have any problems connecting to game controllers from an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. If you are curious what else was tested, check the full video below, which runs from almost half an hour.

Time to rethink the Android tablet

Amazons Kindle Fire has laid down the gauntlet, the powerful dual core Kindle Fire cuts down on some features, which I do not think will be missed (and a few that might), but it got 95,000 pre-orders in one day, and it only sells in the US for now. It would have been at least 95,001 if they let me order it from the Philippines. 

The gauntlet has been laid, a 7-inch Android tablet costs US$199. In apparent response prices for the HTC Flyer and BlackBerry PlayBook has dropped with some retailers to US$299.

When I saw the specifications for the Xoom, last February, I was thinking, what was Motorola thinking. It turned out, these specifications became the standard for the industry. In the end, there is too much fat on an Android tablet, and this does result in higher costs.

An Android tablet (and an iPad for that matter) pretty much mimics all the capabilities of our smartphones, except for call and text functionality. Some tablets are actually fully capable phones. The question is why. I think it is fair to assume a tablet owner would also own a smartphone.

Drop the primary camera. Maybe we need a secondary camera for video calls, but why have a primary camera? A smartphone is really a more convenient size for taking pictures and video. 

Drop GPS. A smartphone also makes a better navigation device. Imagine cradling your 10.1-inch tablet on your cars dashboard. Apps requiring location can get the info from cellular towers and WiFi signals.

Rethink the 720p screen on smaller tablets. The 600 x 1024 screen on the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab is good enough and the one on the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook is gorgeous.

Decide what it is for, and build it for a dedicated purpose. With laptops, you have high end gaming machines and lower end general purpose device. Each tablet coming out embodies the latest technology the market has to offer. This could be replicated having dual core gaming and media tablets, and single core web browsing tablets with less RAM. Yes, you can have your uber tablets too with 3D cameras, a 3D display, GPS and a 1080p screen.

Lower end tablets do exist, but from manufacturers which make us think, twice and thrice about the source.

In the end all this might just save a few dollars, but people expect Android tablets to be cheaper than iPads, and smaller tablets cheaper than larger ones, so every peso (or dollar) does count.

Around the web iPhone 4S

Dont expect the iPhone 4S in the Philippines till December at the earliest.  GSM Arena has a list of iPhone 4S launch dates, and we are not on it yet.

Less battery life? Phone Arena compares the new Apple iPhone 4S with the older iPhone 4. Two things struck me. While the two phones looks the same, the iPhone 4S is actually 1mm taller.

While Apple touted that it had longer talk-time during its launch, we noticed standy time dropped by 33%. Hhhmmm....

No 4G? PCMag asks if the iPhone 4S can survice without 4G? The new iPhone 4S has HSPDA+ 14.4 support which is twice as fast as data transfer on the the iPhone 4 which supported only HSDPA. 

HSDPA+ 14.4 means 1.5 to 2 Mbps download speeds in the real world. But this just means it catches up with 2010 Androids like the HTC Desire HD which already came with HSDPA+ 14.4. Android being released today come with true HSDPA+ 21 or even faster 4G or LTE connectivity.

The next iPhone will be coming in six months or less.  I think we will be seeing a iPhone 4G (or 4GS) or even a new iPhone 5 before before Q2 2012. I do not see how long Apple can hold off giving their phone faster wireless connectivity.

Better camera. Techcrunch looks in depth look at the improved 8MP f/2.4 with a back lit camera of the iPhone 4S. But is that really new?

Sony Ericssons XPeria Arc already came out with a camera with a back ;it sensor. The HTC Titan already came out with a 8MP f/2.2 camera last month, which also features a back lit sensor just like the unit in the iPhone 4S. We expect to see this camera appear on other HTC phones as well. The best phone camera in the business would still appear to be the Nokia N8 with its large 1/1.83" sensor.

Better camera yes, but we will have to wait for comparisons to find out if it is really groundbreaking.

Disappointed? The Apple faithful may still claim this is the perfect phone, but the Apple share price dropped a whole 5% with the new release. With the iPhone 4, Apple was playing catch up with phone like the Google Nexus One, which it did. With the iPhone 4S, has Apple caught up with phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II? Not completely. Even it did, a new round of Android will be out before the end of the month.

Information On Smartphones Flies that you might not know of!

End of 2012, mobile applications may exceed the news sites on the Internet.

More than an epiphenomenon, it’s a real groundswell. Last Thursday, the mobile users have accessed more than ever their smartphones to stay abreast of current events. The French have taken on their mobile evolution of the assault by the raid on the apartment of the killer of Toulouse. The major applications have all seen their audience skyrocket. The Figaroa, for example, recorded a threefold increase in the number of visitors to its mobile applications (iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone). For Le Monde, the number of hits on mobile surpassed those of the website. In exceptional cases, this could become the rule by the end of the year.

Beyond a dramatic news, the consultation of information on the go tends to be rooted in the mores. Almost 37% of smartphone users in five major European countries (including France) have already accessed news sites via an application or Web browser, according to the latest study released by ComScore. An increase of 74% in one year! In France, sales rose 59% year over year, the prize going to Spain, with a growth of 160%. Owners of smartphones become true “addicted” to information on mobile. More than a third of them consults news sites at least once a month, an increase of 74%, and already 10% of them do almost daily, an increase of 82% . In other words, people who visit the sites more information on mobile are also those who have more appeal.

Changing consumption patterns
“The increased adoption of smartphones in Europe contributed to the consumption of news and information on the fly,” says Blandine Silverman, director of ComScore Mobile. Last year, more than 14 million smartphones were sold in France. In addition, the size of phone screens has increased significantly, which makes reading easier. Moreover, with the exception of Apple, handset makers have contributed – especially through financial support – the development of applications related to information.

Important for magazine publishers attending a changing consumption patterns, the challenge is no less crucial for brands of mobile phones. Anxious to respond to the expectations of local consumers, they are trying to encourage publishers to develop applications in their world. This was accompanied by an improvement in the quality of products tailored for mobile, with more alerts. These short messages are a means of access to information very popular with mobile users.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has the specifications of you basic Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) dual core tablet. It has a 800 x 1280 screen, a dual core 1GHz processor on a Tegra 2 chipset, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB (non-expandable storage), A-GPS, WiFi,  3G (HSDPA+ 21.1 mbps) and Bluetooth,  connectivity and HDMI and USB connectivity through an adapter. It also comes with two cameras capable of 720p video recording. It also has full phone functionality. So it is the most fully feature tablet in the Philippine market.

What is to like, hardware wise? The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has a smaller 8.9-inch screen compared to its competitors, but this also gives it a much lighter weight.

Smaller but still substantial screen, in exchange for the lighter weight seems to be worth it. It is 15% lighter than its bigger brother, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 25% lighter than the Apple iPad 2. 

Ultimately, 10-inch tablets are used on tables the same way we use netbooks and laptops. If used a tablet on a table, I really would much rather use a laptop. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a more mobile device. Something which is easier to use in hand than its larger 10.1-inch siblings.

With Ice Cream Sandwich having been launched, more and more Android apps will be optimized for 720p screens. It could be the right time for an Android tablet.

Would I buy it? Well no. I do not feel the need for 3G on a tablet. I already have it on my phone. Basically, I would rather not have to maintain a second line. Since I do not appreciate 3G, than things like Apple iPad 2 16GB WiFi only version is still a cheaper option at Php23,990. I also do not need full phone functionality on a tablet, so that score no points we me either.

Second, I do not like being an early adopter. Ice Cream Sandwich has been launched so more and more Android apps will be optimized for 720p screens, but I will have to wait for those. Apple has 100,000 tablet optimized apps now, though they usually cost twice as much as iPhone apps.

So it is a hard choice. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is compelling hardware wise and there are more free apps on the Android Market. It is both a tablet and a phone is that is important for. But for a pure tablet, Apple iPads are still the safer bet. For Php24.5K, I would not want to be an early adopter.

LG Optimus 3D P920 Handheld 3D no glasses required

Techie.com.ph reports that the LG Optimus 3D P920 is here, and it is priced at a reasonable Php29,900. This puts it at just 2K over the suggested retail price of Php27,900 for the LG Optimux 2x.

The LG Optimus 3D is a Google Android phone with a large 4.3-inch 480 x 800 resolution 3D display. At the back, it has dual 5MP camera which can do 1080p video capture in 3D. The Optimus 2x is powered by a dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and PowerVR SGX540 GPU with 512MB of RAM. While this is far from enough power to dethrone the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S II as the fastest smartphone in the world,  this Cortex-A9 and power VR combo is a bit more powerful package than the Nvidia Tegra 2 based system on the LG Optimus One, and the Qualcomm package on the HTC Sensation. 

Being the second fastest phone in the country with 3D gadgetry at Php29,900 is not a bad place to be. And if the 3D gadgetry is important to you, GSMArena recommends that this is the one to get. 

As you can see, the LG Optimus 3D is much better for creating and consuming 3D content than the HTCs EVO 3D, while the EVO 3D is better at doing your regular smartphone heavy lifting. If the 3D stuff is the thing of most importance, then you have no choice but the Optimus 3D. On the other side, if you want it just as another cool feature on your phone - then you should go for the EVO 3D. And honestly, the coolness of the 3D effect wears off rather fast once you get used to it. Not to mention there aren’t much ways to share your 3D images and videos online.

Vodafone puts up registration page for “your next Galaxy”

Want to get updates on the device no one is positive what it looks like or what it is? Then head on over to Vodafone UK’s site where you can register for updates on “the next Galaxy.” The sign up form simply reads, “Fill out your details. And well fill you in - on everything about the new Galaxy.”

After launching a countdown timer that lead to teaser trailers, the vague marketing looks like it will continue until the official announcement is made. It has been assumed that Samsung’s next Galaxy device, presumable the Galaxy S III, would be available for all major UK carriers, but it’s safe to safe Vodafone will definitely be in that mix.
